Ear correction surgery
Otoplasty: correction intervention of the ears
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the ears: both the size of the pavilion and the shape, but also any asymmetries.
People who are unable to live peacefully with aesthetic imperfections such as:
The protruding ears
The asymmetrical ears
Very large ears
The dysmorphic auricles
Injured or excessively large lobes
Ear plastic surgery: the otoplasty surgery
Even children can undergo ear correction surgery: medical research confirms that the new shape is not disturbed by the patient’s growth or physical development.
The operation lasts between 2 and 5 hours and is performed under local anaesthesia, after which the surgeon makes an incision that allows him to have access to the cartilage of the posterior part of the auricle. The cartilage is folded to reduce the protrusion of the ears, after which the fold and skin are sutured.
Finally, the patient is made to wear a post otoplasty band, which, in addition to protecting the operated area, also supports the new ear norm.
Otoplasty: after the surgery
After undergoing otoplasty, post-operative pain is normal: it is a tingling associated with a sense of numbness in the treated area, to which bruises and redness are added. It is necessary to remain completely rested for 48 hours.
As anticipated, after the operation, the patient must wear an elastic band for otoplasty for a few days (generally not more than a week), to prevent the treated area from suffering shocks and to promote scarring of the pavilions. After the first few days, doctors recommend the use of a delicate band to be applied around the head at night, for about 6 weeks.
Adults must stay off work for a week, while children should be absent from school for at least a couple of weeks, as they could accidentally be hit by playing at the break. To resume playing sports, however, it is good to wait at least 12 weeks.
The results of otoplasty are permanent and fully satisfactory.
