Bariatric surgery and body remodelling
What is bariatric surgery? It is a viable solution for severely obese people whose condition is treatable only with diet and exercise. Esistono diversi interventi volti a trattare l’obesità grave e il rimodellamento corporeo: si tratta di operazioni in grado non solo di far perdere peso, ma anche di ridurre l’assunzione e l’assorbimento di cibo.
Bariatric surgery allows you to reduce the size of the stomach and the area of food absorption. The main interventions are:
The gastric band:
surgery which, through the application of an elasticband around the upper part of the stomach, reduces food intake;
Gastrectomy:
a treatment used for patients with BMI ≥ 60, for whom other operations would carry a high risk of complications. The “sleeve gastrectomy” guarantees an early sense of satiety through the vertical resection of the stomach;
Gastric bypass:
an operation that in addition to limiting food intake, also contains its absorption. This is possible with the reduction of the stomach to a small pouch that is connected directly to the small intestine (skipping the section responsible for the absorption of food) with a jejunal loop.
Bariatric surgery: before and after
Because bariatric surgery must commit itself to the best possible result, it is necessary on the part of the patient large edition: not only with post-operative treatment and follow up, above all but by demonstrating determination by following strict rules and by doing physical activity.
In particular, immediately after the operation the dysmorphisms, consequent to the markedly slimming effect of effective bariatric surgery, often require an adequate plastic surgical body remodelling (so-called “body contouring”), the patient consumes only liquids, since the gastrointestinal tract must still recover full functionality. The subsequent phases are also settling: the quantities of food eaten must be modest since the containment capacity of the stomach has been reduced and exceeding the doses would lead to dysphagia, diarrhoea, nausea, headache and vomiting.
Furthermore, patients must be followed by a nutritionist and a psychologist, since it is essential to investigate the relationship with food and the actual willingness to join the therapeutic program.
