BLEPHAROPLASTY
Blepharoplasty: what is it and what are the results
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that eliminates excess skin and hernias of fat that are deposited on the eyelids and make up the eyelid bags. This operation is recommended in the case of:
Accumulations of periorbital fat-causing bags under the eyes
Falling shape of the eyelids
Excess skin above the eyes, resulting in coverage of the eyelid crease
Periorbital skin depression and dark circles
Crow’s feet
Eyelid swelling can cause tearing and narrowing of the visual field
Upper and lower blepharoplasty
Complete blepharoplasty is performed on both eyelids, unlike upper and lower blepharoplasty which act only in specific areas around the eye. Based on the portion of skin to be operated on, the cosmetic surgeon cuts the skin tissue separating it from the muscle and adipose tissue, and then removes the excess quantities.
The scars of the upper blepharoplasty are hidden in the eyelid crease, while those of the lower blepharoplasty is located near the lower ciliary margin. In both cases, it takes up to 4 months for the scars to lighten permanently.
Results of blepharoplasty and recovery
Blepharoplasty corrects those defects in the area surrounding the eyes, eliminating the effect of a look that is always tired, aged and sad: the results are visible and appreciable after about 2 weeks. In some cases, moreover, the surgery also corrects some problems related to vision, which can be reduced by deposits of sagging skin.
Recovery times vary depending on the type of operation: while it takes about ten days to return to routine and work activities after upper blepharoplasty, surgery on thelower eyelids, on the other hand, requires at least two weeks of rest. Whatever the type of blepharoplasty performed, finally, the appearance of swelling and bruising is common and a tendency to dry eye may also be felt: these symptoms disappear after a couple of weeks.
