Abdominoplasty and reconstructive surgery of the anterior wall of the abdomen
Abdominoplasty is a plastic surgery that removes fat tissue and excess skin from the abdomen. It is not a therapy to lose or control weight, but rather, it is an operation indicated for women who have experienced numerous pregnancies and for those who have the after-effects of a drastic weight loss diet followed to treat severe obesity. cases are included in which people have large accumulations of abdominal adipose tissue, linked to a relaxation of the muscles that caused excess skin: we speak of abdominal diastasis.
Abdominal diastasis: what it is
Abdominal diastasis is the obvious distancing of the rectus abdominis muscles to the right and left of the navel. We speak of diastasis of the rectus abdominis when the distance between the right and left parts exceeds 2 cm, and specifically:
Diastasis is mild when less than 3 cm
Diastasis is moderate when between 3 and 5 cm
Diastasis is severe when greater than 5 cm
Although after childbirth the “swollen belly” is a consequence considered normal and common, when the excessive swelling persists even after 6 months from the birth, it becomes a pathology that presents physical symptoms and affects women on a psychological level. It is a functional deficit of the abdominal muscles that stretch excessively.
Abdominoplasty: before and after
Abdominoplasty improves the appearance of the abdomen, removing both large and moderate amounts of fat: we speak of complete abdominoplasty in the first case and partial abdominoplasty in the second. In both cases the operation can cause pain, alterations in the state of well-being (or cenesthesia), since the operation is performed under general anesthesia, and fatigue; therefore it is important that patients remain at rest for at least 6 weeks.
The results of abdominoplasty are satisfactory, however they must always be accompanied by physical activity and a balanced diet.
